In Post Notes, I add some additional thoughts or context to a blog post I’ve previously written. The original post can be found here.
- Some people have asked me what the most secure chat apps are. I’d recommend Signal, WhatsApp, or iMessage. Popular chat apps Viber and Line also offer end-to-end encryption.
- Many people believe that Telegram is a viable secure messaging option. It isn’t.
- KakaoTalk and Facebook Messenger both offer secure options, but they’re opt-in, do not allow seamless use between devices, and lack useful features, such as group chatting. It’s really disappointing because I have many friends who use both of those apps.
- Lifehacker, a member of the Gawker Media family, is a great site for well-sourced, credible advice. They’ve recently been posting a good number of guides about privacy. Here is just a smattering of them:
- How to Clean up Your Privacy on Snapchat
- See Which Tech Companies Won’t Delete Your Data With Naughty List
- How to Delete Your Phone Contacts from Facebook
- What Are Your Best Data Privacy Tricks?
- Lock Down Your Social Media Data With the PlusPrivacy Chrome Extension
- Delete Your Old Facebook Activity With This Must-Have Extension
- Don’t Delete Facebook—Just Be Smarter on Facebook
- Bulk Delete Apps and Website Logins on Facebook
- How to opt out of Facebook data sharing (from iMore)
- Due to a weird legal loophole, authorities in the United States are able to compel someone to unlock their phone using fingerprint without a warrant. (I am not sure how this works for facial recognition.)
- UPDATE (May 25): Speaking of Lifehacker, here’s a good guide they created explaining GDPR, the European Union’s new privacy law.
